Engineers often bury the recommendation under twenty pages of findings. Product leads then skim to the wrong paragraph. A go/hold memo should fit on a single page, with the decision at the top.
Suggested order
- Recommendation — go, hold, or go-with-conditions
- Conditions — numbered, owned, dated
- Blockers remaining — only items that justify a hold
- Accepted risks — issues you will ship knowing
- Watch plan — who stares at crash dashboards for 72 hours
Tone
Avoid theatrical language. “Hold until retry backoff ships” beats “the platform is not ready for the future of mobility.” Leaders need a calendar decision.
In our Release Readiness Review, the memo is a named deliverable. Teams that reuse the template for later releases tend to argue less about framing and more about facts.
